Five Used Hatchbacks Account for 33.7% of Sales in India, Swift Leads at 9.6%
Five hatchbacks account for 33.7% of used hatchback sales on Cars24, with the Maruti Suzuki Swift leading at 9.6%. Explore the sales shares, fuel preferences and transmission trends shaping India's used hatchback market in 2026.
Hatchbacks account for 50.2% of all used car sales in India, although their share has been declining as more buyers turn towards SUVs for greater ground clearance and a commanding road presence. Despite this shift, hatchbacks remain a practical entry point into car ownership for first-time buyers, small families and city drivers. The five leading models continue to attract buyers for different reasons, including running costs, ease of driving and resale confidence.
The figures are based on data derived from Cars24's internal vehicle transactions through July 2026, covering the best-selling used hatchbacks in 2026. Maruti Suzuki's three models account for 21.7% of used hatchback sales, while Hyundai's two models contribute 12.0%. Petrol is the leading fuel choice across all five models, while manual transmissions account for at least 86.6% of sales for each. The individual market shares represent each model's proportion of total used hatchback sales.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift tops the rankings with a 9.6% share, comfortably ahead of the Wagon R 1.0 at 6.8%. Its sporty design, energetic driving experience and accessibility to young buyers and small families have supported its popularity over two decades. Its established demand in the used car market also contributes to buyer confidence in resale prospects. Petrol variants account for 60.1% of used Swift sales, followed by diesel at 30.6% and CNG at 9.1%. Manual transmission variants represent 94.1% of sales.
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 ranks second with a 6.8% share. It has the highest CNG proportion among the five models, with CNG variants accounting for 41.2% of sales and petrol versions making up the remaining 58.8%. Its fuel mix reflects its appeal to daily commuters focused on cost per kilometre, while its tall-boy design provides generous headroom and an easy driving position. Buyers considering a used CNG variant should check the cylinder's test date and account for the space it occupies in the boot. Older examples may also be available among second-hand cars priced under Rs. 2 lakh, depending on age, kilometres and city. Manual variants account for 94.5% of used Wagon R 1.0 sales.
The Hyundai i10 accounts for 6.6% of used hatchback sales despite no longer being sold new. Its compact dimensions make it suitable for tight parking spaces, narrow lanes and dense urban traffic. Low maintenance costs and ease of parking continue to support demand for older examples. Petrol variants dominate at 82.4%, while CNG accounts for 15.9% and LPG for 1.7%. Automatic transmissions represent just 7.6% of sales, leaving manual variants with a 92.4% share.
The Hyundai Grand i10 follows with a 5.4% share. It appeals to buyers seeking the compact dimensions of the i10 alongside a roomier, more modern cabin. It is also the only Hyundai model among the five with a diesel option, chosen by 15.8% of buyers. Petrol variants account for 73.5% of sales, while CNG contributes 10.6%. Automatic transmissions have a higher share than on the i10, at 11.9%. Buyers considering either Hyundai model can consult a used Hyundai i10 buying guide for checks relevant to older small cars, including service history and clutch feel.
The Maruti Suzuki Baleno completes the list with a 5.3% share and stands out as the premium option among the five leading models. Automatic variants account for 13.4% of used Baleno sales, the highest proportion among the five hatchbacks. Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice at 82.3%, followed by diesel at 11.5% and CNG at 6.2%. Manual transmissions nevertheless retain a substantial lead, accounting for 86.6% of sales.
Taken together, the five models reflect a used hatchback market driven by running costs, accessible servicing and confidence in resale value rather than a focus on features alone. Manual transmissions remain dominant across all five, while CNG has established a presence in every model, particularly the Wagon R 1.0. Although hatchbacks are losing market share as demand for SUVs increases, the continued popularity of these established models underscores their role in providing practical and familiar options for buyers in India's used car market.
